RWANDA CHAPEL – RUKOMO

SPATIAL ATTEMPTS OF CO-EXISTENCE

DESCRIPTION

The Chapel amplifies the interactive aspect of the catholic rite and architecture by creating silent interactions. The enclosure specializes at separating different users in groups of attitudes: Interact – Acknowledge – Ignore – Observe.

These groups provide an elastic platform that serves the different dynamics of relationships between individuals, a residual scar from the Rwandan 1994 Genocide. The separations intersect at the center of the Chapel where the Lectern is placed, right beside it on a pedestal sits the Altar.

The Chapel is made out of local adobe bricks and bamboo. By keeping the materials familiar, a collaboration in construction would solidify the local sense of mutual ownership.
